MY TAKE
***My apologies everyone! I scheduled this post for 8 today… it should have gone live at 8am but I goofed when scheduling and I must have clicked 8pm instead. I was out of the house all day and didn’t realize it wasn’t live until I sat down to check my socials.***
As most of you already know after the countless fairytale and mythology retellings that I have reviewed on this blog… I’m an absolute sucker for them. I love reimaginings and retellings because they give a fresh take on stories that have been around for ages. This story was no different in that respect. It was a reimagined Hercules tale and you’ll have to excuse me for playing “Zero to Hero” on repeat while I write this review… and ya know any references to this movie that I might unintentionally slip into this review – which was a retelling in itself.
This story was extra cute, and I managed to finish reading it in a little over an hour, so you can imagine it is not a particularly long book. But what is included is a fresh take on the demigod story (one where all participants are human and most attendees are in highschool). There are some cute nods to the Hercules mythos but it is a story all on its own that has merely borrowed these characters and worked them into a cute highschool drama.
Yes there is romance… quite a bit of it, as you might expect from looking at the cover so if that’s not your thing then this is not the book for you. There were a few typos and grammatical mishaps but nothing too life altering and they did not affect my ability to read the book.
All in all, I’d say I thoroughly enjoyed the book and the premise ❤
4.5 Quills
It gave me all the feels and had me giggling at an inappropriate time seeing how everyone was asleep as I should have been. Also, quite in love with the Once Upon a Time feel this story had with all the intertwining fairytale characters like Ariel and Prince Eric. I definitely want to read more from this author(s) and this series!

I have been writing for as long as I can remember. One of my mentors (you know who you are) often reminds me of my first foray into the world of literary fiction. It was a lively story about a bee’s journey to find a pot of missing honey. He says that I have improved since then. I think that he’s right.

Review
So, it’s been a while since I’ve posted a review of a book… what can I say except life is rough sometimes lol? But man, am I glad that I took the time out to review this book. First, the premise really got me! One of my majors is anthropology so I’ve come across a lot of genie or jinn myths but not many written literary stories that are as intriguing as the myth itself. This book captured that intrigue. I also found the writing style and POV to be unique and executed excellently. It is not a common choice so originally, I was thrown off but as the story progressed it worked well to tell the story and explain much of what was happening. While this is not the first book I’ve read that is written in this way, the number of stories that do it well are low so it was a refreshing experience for me as a long-time reader. In addition to a pretty amazing storyline and writing style, I loved the characters who felt tangible and relatable even in a fantastical setting and story.
4.5 Quills
While there is romance in this story, it is not the main focal point and it does not distract from the main story and serves as a nice added bonus. I honestly can’t say enough about this book except, read it and decide for yourself!

Book Description:
However, Gwen doesn’t know this. She’s just a sixteen-year-old girl with a place on the debate team and a powerful crush on Jay, the soon-to-be homecoming king. She doesn’t know her little sister could actually run away with Peter Pan, or that she might have to chase after her to bring her home safe. Gwen will find out though—and when she does, she’ll discover she’s in the middle of a looming war between Neverland and reality.
She’ll be out of place as a teenager in Neverland, but she won’t be the only one. Peter Pan’s constant treks back to the mainland have slowly aged him into adolescence as well. Soon, Gwen will have to decide whether she’s going to join impish, playful Peter in his fight for eternal youth… or if she’s going to scramble back to reality in time for the homecoming dance.
When it comes to my sister and I, we couldn’t be more different. The same could be said about Rosemary and Gwen, the 2 sisters in this book. My sister is “dead inside” – her words not mine lol – and I am a bleeding heart. But even with our differences, there are some similarities and a connection you can only find with siblings. We annoyingly finish each other’s sentences or blurt out the same sarcastic thoughts. It’s a bond that comes for a lifetime of each other’s influence.
So being the bleeding heart that I am, I am not ashamed to admit that I did my fair share of sniffling in this book. It’s not a sad tale at all. At least not as far as I can tell but there are some inevitable moments where adulthood and reality rush in and damage the beauty and innocence of being a child. To me that was the most profound message in this book. But like many would say… no one in the world reads the same book, so it is likely that no one else will see what I see when I’m taken on this marvelous journey.
It was an extremely well written book and the beginning of what I can only assume is a new and unique series. I loved every minute of this book; and let me be clear, I devoured this book in what felt like minutes. There was strong character development, imagery, scenery.laughter and sadness and even a bit of envy while reading this book… in my opinion all the things that make a book more than just good, but great.
My only real complaint was the open ended final chapter. If this is indeed the beginning of a series, it’s a good way to gather more readers since you are literally left thinking ‘what the heck just happened’.
It’s interesting because other than some internal conflict and the mention of a war and a few moments that reflect that war, there was really no conflict. No clear “villain”and no clear “resolution” and yet I love this book. It’s odd because that’s nothing at all like me. I usually need a clear beginning, middle and end with all the fixings, and while the story itself was easy to follow it almost came off as a steady stream of information. With the book being called the Neverland Wars, I kind of expected a bit more conflict. But regardless it was an enjoyable read that likes to poke at emotions.

Book Description:

Cassie Jayne Bishop grew up the only non-believer in town of Coven. When a stranger comes to the sleepy town of New Salem, everything she thought was true unraveled around her. Ethan made her question everything, even her sister’s death. Clues start to pile up and Cassie is determined to find out if the Coven was the real reason her sister died.
What she uncovers terrifies her to the very depths of her soul….
My Take On The Book:
I soared, I cried, I shattered, I laughed and I loved. This book was just too much for me to handle (all in a good way I swear). And I’m kind of fan girl geeking because this is part one of a series and I can’t wait to get my hands on the next!
I loved the woven mythology and the differences between Wicca and Witchcraft. The world that author Apryl Baker created was unique in a refreshing way, but similar enough to books that I already love that I found it simple enough to emerge myself into. It was a great rebirth the dwindling literary witchcraft world.
I can’t say that disliked anything in this book really, at least nothing to major. The cover is simply amazing, exactly the right image for CJ, the storyline is uniquely it’s own and the characters notably loveable. Sure, there was some predictability but only for a moment or two and it was nothing to get in a snit about.
I was extremely happy about the thought and research that was put into the magic and history of the town. ::sigh:: it was just an all-around spectacular read.
The Great (Pros):
- Ethan. Mysterious hunk and love interest to our feisty main character. What’s not to love. Sure he has his typical dude moments but he’s a pretty awesome charater.
- Jeff. OMG, neighbor boy was just too cute. He had a couple of douche moments but he is a teenage hormonal boy. He proves just how much he cares for CJ all through the second half of the book. He is a great friend. And while I couldn’t get behind his affections for CJ (which totally sucks because he’s my go to guy, the one I usually root for in stories like this) I do want to see him happy.
- Papa Bishop. He is such a great dad. Really. Sure, in the beginning your hesitant but really, he pulls through and shows how much he loves his family.
- CJ. She is such a great main character. She’s smart, strong, loyal and feisty. She doesn’t do what you expect and that is great.
- Billy. Kay’s boyfriend is pretty great guy when it comes to his girl but he has his moments.
- MJ/Kay. I really liked her character, how much devotion she has for her best friend. And while that devotion does get tested and she does falter, she always jumps back up to prove that she cares.
- Friendship. I loved the friendships that were woven into this story. It was strong and yet a subtle element to the story. It doesn’t overpower or take away from the story, instead it fills in the blanks where the story would otherwise be lacking.
- Romance. I really enjoyed the romance, yes even the slight love triangle. It definitely added some great elements and plot twists to the story. What I liked most is that, although she technically had 2 boys in love with her, it was really a love triangle… not really. Not every girl is a hapless indecisive twat. So it was refreshing & I hope it continues along that path.
- Magic. The premise of the story, the building block. It was done so exceptionally well.
The Not So Great (Cons):
- Momma Bishop. Evil brainwashed, power hungry hoe bag. You are not a good momma even if you do seem like one at first. You shouldn’t have had children! ‘Nuff said.
- Billy. When it isn’t about his girl, he has the tendency to be a complete asshat.
- MJ/Kay. In the moments when she falters, you are reminded who her father is and you come to dislike her immensely. Luckily for her, she loves her best friend and you are able to forgive when she does show her awesome.
- Now to those of you who have read the story or those who will and remember this review, this might come as a shock but I didn’t hate or dislike the character of Mr. Martin. Sure he is a scum bag, loathsome character, a horrible man and father… but every story needs a villain and he was an exceptional one.
5 Quills
This book comes highly recommended by this reviewer. A perfect read for those who loved ‘The Wicked Series’ by Nancy Holder & Debbie Viguie or ‘The Witch Season Series’ by Jeff Mariotte.
An exceptional book about romance, friendship, intrigue, magic, and betrayal. A bewitching story of a young girl and her quest for truth. Bring a pack of tissues and let ‘The Promise’ by Apryl Baker cast its spell on you.

About The Author
So who am I? Well, I’m the crazy girl with an imagination that never shuts up. I LOVE scary movies. My friends laugh at me when I scare myself watching them and tell me to stop watching them, but who doesn’t love to get scared? I grew up in a small town nestled in the southern mountains of West Virginia where I spent days roaming around in the woods, climbing trees, and causing general mayhem. Nights I would stay up reading Nancy Drew by flashlight under the covers until my parents yelled at me to go to sleep.
I love books, I love writing books, and I love entertaining people with my silly stories.

Praise for Stir Me Up:

“Cami’s slow burn for a wounded hero will rivet readers. I seriously loved this book.” —Jennifer Echols, author of Dirty Little Secret
“This book is one of my favorite young adult contemporaries. Not only does it feature a hot romance, it’s also very meaningful and well, you just have to read it and see.” —#1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout
My Take On The Book:
There was just something so beautiful and endearing about this book, I couldn’t put it down. I fell in love with the character and the story. It’s a hard book to break down into pros and cons since a lot of it is interwoven so you’ll just have to make due with these notes.
Cami, is a loyal and loveable character, but she has these moments of stupidity that make you wanna shake the girl. But when it comes to Julian and their romance ::sigh:: she does it right. He on the other hand, has stupid boy moments and while it’s somewhat understandable due to his hardships, its still utterly frustrating. This was definitely an uplifting book and a romance that reels you in. I kept trying to guess what would happen and more often then not, I was wrong. Its not what you expect and that is what makes it so perfect. My only real complaint is how hard people come down on Cami for doing whats natural, the dude is a jerk through the better half of the novel and she treats him just like she’d treat any other jerk. They all want to help him fit in and make it easier, they try so hard not to remind him of his disability but then, all that coddling does remind him. I feel like Cami was the only one that treated him normally. Yeah she looked and freaked a bit the first time she saw him, but she had never been face to face with those types of injuries. Everyone just tiptoes around the wounded vet and that is just a reminder of what happened, what he feels he failed at.
The author did a magnificent job at portraying his pain and his growth as well as the growth of their relationship. It was all together beautiful and captivating.

The Hole can’t keep me. The Hole can’t break me.
I am more than my brand. I’m a fighter.
My name is Lexi Hamilton, and this is my story.
My Take On The Book:
Wow, holy cow. I’ve wanted to read this for awhile now, ever since I participated in the book blitz. So I literally jumped at the opportunity to review it. It did not disappoint.
This is a truly amazing book by two very talented ladies and a great start into what I’m sure will be a popular series. You can see all the thought put into this book in every turn of the page.
The Great (Pros):
- The Characters. Every single character had something to offer the development n this story. The good guys were great and even a bit faulted. I liked most of them even Keegan( though I will admit to wanting to slap him around a couple of times) and the villains were truly sick a twisted individuals. They leave you feeling vulnerable.
- The Hole. While the place itself was a rank and horrifying, that was the aspect I liked. It was a bad place unlike any before it. It gave the story a special element of grit. A terrifying place had me biting my nails for the innocent Lexi.
- The Romance. ::sigh:: Cole is so yummy and noble. While I love Lexi, he is the reason the romance worked. He had this way about him and he’s just perfect for her.
- The story of Lexi. It was utterly depressing but it was perfect for the story and character development and it helps you understand the actions of each character a bit more.
- Zeus. I’m a sucker for animals I love them lol. I’m not sure if it’s the goofy and protective way about this dog or the fact that he’s a Great Dane that acts more like a lap dog (except when he puts the mean face on) that made Zeus one of the best parts of this story.
The Not So Great (Cons):
There isn’t much I can say about this title thats negative and what I can say doesn’t affect the rating too much.
- Lexi’s Letter to Cole. Something about this letter bugged me. Not so much in how it was written but I guess in what was written. I think I expected more from her backstory and it felt a bit childish for such mature context. It was something that stuck with me after reading it and not in a good way. I’m not sure how to explain it, so you’ll just have to read it for yourself to see what I mean.
- Romance. While I enjoyed the romance and Cole… it was a bit fast paced. Parts of it seemed rushed and it threw me off a couple of times. I think, if a bit more time was spent exploring that connection I might not have felt that it was so rushed.
- Keegan. While I like his character, I also disliked him. It was a love hate thing. He was so stubborn and pigheaded and wayyy too controlling. There was so much we didn’t know and probably won’t ever know about him and that just leaves his character up in the air.
- Jumpy. Unfortunately, this book was really jumpy. It looked like it was heading one way then made a 180 and went a completely different route. It was just a bit difficult to navigate if your reading it quickly. Slow down when you read it so you can understand it the first time round.
4.5 Quills
Honestly, it was a good book and a great intro to what I’m sure will be an even better series. I look forward to reading the next book and seeing how the story progresses.
