Hunger Games meets Avatar in this spellbinding new Young Adult, Science-Fiction novel by bestselling author Susan James Pierce.
Two hundred years after the Great Disaster, the day earthquakes ravaged Earth’s landscapes, humanity has finally regrouped and is working toward a better future. But in New America – one of three remaining landmasses – overpopulation makes a better future seem bleaker by the year.
Mira (Mirabella) Foster and her parents are citizens of New America, and with the threat of starvation and disease looming on the horizon, a new discovery threatens to push everyone to the brink of chaos: blue markings develop on people’s skin. Markings that allow them to camouflage their skin, but also make them feared, and eventually, targets of violence.
Mira’s dad is one of them.
My Take:
That was both heartbreaking and beautiful. Star Crossed meets Hunger Games meets Avatar. This was a tear jerker that was impossible to put down. The characters had such raw and endearing qualities that I found it impossible not to love them. This was also a very ‘meaty’ book, long and descriptive but never once boring. Its over 60 beautifully written chapters that took a good chunk of my day to read through. That was really refreshing and I can definitely see people enjoying this book throughout a nice long rainy weekend.
I loved how the girls were portrayed and the whole premise of this story was enthralling. My only forewarning to any prospective readers is the synopsis. That was literally the least descriptive synopsis ever, it barely skims the surface of this book. The story was about sooo much more than what you are lead to believe. If this was written any differently that may have been the nail in the coffin for this book but luckily, I found this story so appealing that I didn’t care that the synopsis was vague and lacking. It was literally just a quick summary of the first couple of chapters and not at all of the story as a whole. Had this book been split into different novels it probably would have suited the book more but as it stands, the description could use a little sprucing up.
I loved the way the friendships were forged and portrayed and found our main characters to be some of the most real and noble I’ve ever read. The romance takes a really long time to show itself so if you’re looking for an instant connection love story, this probably isn’t for you but I actually loved that about this book. It lets Mira develop as a person and do what needs to be done.
4.5 Quills
I not only recommend this book to all science fictions readers but I also recommend some tissues be in your general vicinity. I loved the length of this book and the content. It was literally an all-around good read. The cover is amazing and yet simplistic and the title is absolutely perfect.

About The Author
Howard Phillips Lovecraft, of Providence, Rhode Island, was an American author of horror, fantasy and science fiction.
Lovecraft’s major inspiration and invention was cosmic horror: life is incomprehensible to human minds and the universe is fundamentally alien. Those who genuinely reason, like his protagonists, gamble with sanity. Lovecraft has developed a cult following for his Cthulhu Mythos, a series of loosely interconnected fictions featuring a pantheon of human-nullifying entities, as well as the Necronomicon, a fictional grimoire of magical rites and forbidden lore. His works were deeply pessimistic and cynical, challenging the values of the Enlightenment, Romanticism and Christianity. Lovecraft’s protagonists usually achieve the mirror-opposite of traditional gnosis and mysticism by momentarily glimpsing the horror of ultimate reality.
Although Lovecraft’s readership was limited during his life, his reputation has grown over the decades. He is now commonly regarded as one of the most influential horror writers of the 20th Century, exerting widespread and indirect influence, and frequently compared to Edgar Allan Poe.

Diary of a Haunting
M. Verano
Genre: Young Adult Horror
Release Date: August 25, 2015
Publisher: Simon Pulse
ISBN: 978-1481430692
ASIN: B00TBKYJF2
Pages: 320
Goodreads Rating: 3.26
My Rating: 3.5
Book Description:
In the tradition of Paranormal Activity and The Blair Witch Project, an American teen recounts the strange events that occur after she moves into a new—and very haunted—home with her family in this chilling diary that features photos and images of what she experienced.
Letters, photographs, and a journal…all left behind in the harrowing aftermath.
Following her parents’ high-profile divorce, Paige and her brother are forced to move to Idaho with their mother, and Paige doesn’t have very high hopes for her new life. The small town they’ve moved to is nothing compared to the life she left behind in LA. And the situation is made even worse by the drafty old mansion they’ve rented that’s filled with spiders and plenty of other pests that Paige can’t even bear to imagine.
Pretty soon, strange things start to happen around the house—one can of ravioli becomes a dozen, unreadable words start appearing on the walls, and Paige’s little brother begins roaming the house late at night. And there’s something not right about the downstairs neighbor who seems to know a lot more than he’s letting on.
Things only get creepier when she learns about the cult that conducted experimental rituals in the house almost one hundred years earlier. The more Paige investigates, the clearer it all becomes: there’s something in the house, and whatever it is…and it won’t be backing down without a fight.
My Take
… I’m at a complete loss for words.
When I first made my run through Barnes and Noble early September, I came across this book that is actually what started the whole #TipsySpooktacular. I instantly wanted to read it.
When I got home I discovered the creepiness that is the cover. Within minutes, I was rushing to my best friend and roommate’s door and showing him.
I didn’t jump immediately into the book, I wanted to savor this rare find and work my way to it, so I started with a couple other books. Once I was properly prepared and in the mood for what was sure to be a scary story, I cracked open the book and got to reading.
I’m not exactly sure how to interpret the story, is it real or is it merely fiction in the form of quote on quote found documentation. It’s introduced as a true story compiled by the author who happens to be a professor. I took it with a grain of salt and vowed to keep an open mind.
The “haunting” was very slow to start with. The occurrence is rare and far in-between and not untypical of an old relic of a home. But as the story progresses steadily became clear that this was not your run-of-the-mill old house. It was until very late in the story, when I read a particular name of a character that is alluded to throughout the whole story that I truly and honestly began to get scared. I will still prevail I literally had chills. And yet I still don’t know whether to take this as a real account or fiction for the sake of thrills. I’m normally a very open minded person, I tend to believe in the paranormal but I’m not a fanatic. This story had me questioning all sorts of things.
It wasn’t really predictable even if you have moments where you yes that’s something is going to happen. Guessing and predicting are two completely different things. When I guess it’s something more of me just taking a shot in the dark at a completely unsupported theory. And even my guesses were rarely correct.
But on the downside, there was a lot of unanswered questions and for me, an unresolved ending. The ending comes completely out of left field. The story starts one way then makes a complete 180 leaving you scratching you head asking “what?”
I also found the diary format of the book tiresome after I reached the midway point. There was a lot of this book that I loved but alternatively, the was a smidge more that I didn’t. I liked the originality but I didn’t like the unexplained or unresolved story. The beginning had a lot of promise but as all good things ghostly, things hit the metaphorical shitter. Unfortunately, what ultimately killed this story for me was the end which felt like a cop-out to an otherwise interesting read.
I would also like to note that although I liked the narrator Paige, I found her mother’s character was flaky, self-absorbed and annoying.
3.5 Quills
If this was a story and completely fiction, then the characters were extremely well developed even if I did not like them. The setting was very much on the creepy side and the haunting itself was scary. With all these things in mind, I can safely deduce that this book has everything that one needs for an exceptional horror novel had the execution gone correctly.
If these were in fact based of true events, then fudge that just makes it all the more terrifying and slightly if not completely confusing. So in all, I enjoyed the book. I got scared by the book. BUT… I also got confused by the book.
*After some investigation of my own, it seems that this is in fact being marketed as a ‘true’ story and not the imaginings of the author. Whether or not you believe the story is real is solely dependent on the reader.

Revealers & Uninvited by Amanda Marrone Book Spotlight + #Giveaway #TipsySpooktacular Stop 5
Ahem.
Ohai there!
Today I have a treat for you all. It’s another book spotlight BUT there are 2 and they are NOT part of a series :O I know that seems odd from someone like me who absolutely LOVES to read book series, serieses… Ehh I know, not very English major or author-y of me but whatever, I think the first one is correct.
So back on topic, this is more of an Author Spotlight. I don’t exactly remember when I bought these books just that I love them and I really hope you all take a chance on them. I know the goodreads rating isn’t all that great for one of them but I think the books rock.
The books in question are ‘Uninvited’ and ‘Revealers’ by Amanda Marrone. Uninvited is an out of the box vampire read. Abso-freaking-lutely like nothing I have ever read when it comes to vampires. Sure I got a Dangerous Girls by R.L. Stine vibe from it BUT it was a novel all on its own. The similarity starts and ends with the age of the main character, the vampire thing and how dark it is. Literally that is it. This book, and other vampire books sit at 2 vastly different ends of the spectrum. There is no romantizing the vampires. And personally, I liked that this was not really marketed as a vampire book. Aside for my knowledge of vampire invitations, the night time visits and the eerie but beautiful cover, there was no giveaway to the vampire tidbit. Now, before you go all crazy reader on me, this is not a spoiler. The author has mentioned that it is a vampire story and this in no way gives away the plot of the series of events that follow. I literally love this book. It is dark and can seem a bit slow to start with but it’s worth the wait.
Revealers is an interesting and fun magical read. I was initially drawn in by the cover because well come on who wouldn’t be, it’s gorgeous! I love the blue smoke and the simplicity in the design. So I did what most do when a book cover jumps out and snags their attention I flipped it over and got to reading the synopsis. I was all for it! I got to reading and I couldn’t put it down. I even remember where I was sitting for the couple of hours it took for me to finish it. It’s full of plot twists and interesting magic and witches. Its spooky to an extent
but really keeps you on your toes. This too stands on its own as a paranormal novel and book featuring a witchy cast. When all was said and done, I was super sad to see this story was over. They are not spooky in your typical sense but I do feel like these are great books to get you into the Halloween/Samhain mood. See what I did there 😉
Also, funny story guys, I penned a character who was a witch years ago when I was 14, before having read any of these books but she was nameless… I just kept using ‘insert name’ then I read Revealers years later, I loved the characters, all of them. But one name just kept haunting me. Fast forward 1 year and I actually met a woman with this name while shopping for incense. She was a pagan woman like my sister, but her personality was so similar to this witch I had written and it felt like it was meant to be. So in a weird chance of fate, this woman and the book ‘Revealers’ helped me name one of my main characters in The Birth Curse Series, I give you, Zahara Frost ladies and gentlemen.

the words….
About The Author

Not surprisingly, she was extremely scared of the dark—living in fear of cats meowing at the door at night (she was sure they were really monsters pretending to be her cats), and things lurking in basements, attics, dark rooms, and closets.Amanda successfully avoided monster attacks by leaving all the lights on in her house, and convincing other family members to let the cats in—eventually earning a B.A. in Education at SUNY Cortland. She taught fifth and sixth grade in New Hampshire, where she was known for putting on mini-musicals, and dissecting eyeballs and owl pellets with her students.
After taking a very early retirement to raise a family and write novels—some of which have vampires and other creepy creatures, Amanda now lives in Connecticut with her husband, Joe, two kids, two cats, a crayfish, hissing cockroaches, and
their newest addition is Griffin, a havanese dog who can say “Hello” and “I love you”. Check the links page to see Griffin’s YouTube videos where you can see him in action.
Amanda loves reading, going to Broadway shows, creepy crawly things, hiking, annoying her husband with show tunes, and is thinking about getting another tattoo. She is still scared of the dark.
Amanda’s first two books for teens, Uninvited and Revealers are available now, and her next book Devoured will be out in September of 2009. Her middle grade series The Magic Repair Shop Chronicles: The Multiplying Menace, Kobold Blues
and The Shape Shifter’s Curse will be available starting in the summer of 2010.

As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a deserted island for good reason. And somehow—impossible though it seems—they may still be alive.
A spine-tingling fantasy illustrated with haunting vintage photography, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children will delight adults, teens, and anyone who relishes an adventure in the shadows.
My Take
This book is 1 of 3 novels currently released with a movie coming out sometime in 2016. It’s a book was really excited to read as it was recommended to me by my sister, who may or not be a pain in the ass but most definitely knows my style when it comes to books.
I really enjoyed it! At first I was enthralled with the back story, the way Jacob describes his grandfather and even the portion of the tragic event that befalls his family and then it just seemed to make a screeching halt. It slowed down and you are given a lot of information that is not exactly necessary but enlightening. When the story picks up again, it’s difficult to put the book down.
It’s not the hide under your covers kind of book but it has got a serious creep factor associated with it. This comes off as a mostly haunting tale, with secretive and wary characters with a dodgy past that I couldn’t wait to read more about. As each clue was revealed I became more and more enthralled. Like I said, it’s not your typical scary story but the creep factor is definitely there especially with the use of these old eccentric photographs, all pictured in black and white. If anything… I felt like the photographs were the real star of the show, that’s not to say that the story wasn’t great or unique because it was and that’s not to say that Mr. Riggs is not an excellent story teller because he is, but there is just something about the photos that accompanied certain parts of this story that takes all the attention and occasionally caused a chill to run down my spine.
4.5 Quills
I found that I liked every character, good and bad. They were all likable and realistic in a sense and intriguing. Also, there’s a bit of a romance in this book but it’s not a huge one and it doesn’t take over the book it’s kind of a minor back burner which I found helped relieve some of the ick factor that was associated with it in my opinion. I look forward to reading the next book in this series and seeing where Jacob’s story goes!

The Morganville Vampires Series by Rachel Caine Spotlight #TipsySpooktacular Stop 3
Hello again my little ghouls and goblins! Next up on the #TipsySpooktacular month long giveaway is another one of my favorite series ‘The Morganville Vampires’.
I came across this gem shortly after the 3rd was published. I was searching for a completely non-romantic vampire book and this seemed perfect. I read the book in all of one afternoon, handed it to my sister to read and when we were both well and hooked rushed to buy the next 2 the series. I got to book 6 and then life kind of took over and the series fell to the back burner. I discovered a really cool site not too long ago (review of that site coming soon) and may have gone a little book buying crazy so on my free time I’m happily finishing this series and loving every second of it.
The cool thing about this series is the super short web series online hosted on ‘Geeks & Sundry‘ youtube page thanks to the producers Rachel Caine/Pen Ultimate Productions, Sheri Bryant/Geek & Sundry and the ever wonderful Felicia Day/Geek & Sundry (nerd/geek queen extraordinaire). There is currently only 1 season, with six 9ish minute long episodes. The acting isn’t superb so don’t go hoping for a blockbuster hit but its fun. Plus as a bonus you get Amber Benson (Tara from Buffy the Vampire Slayer) playing The Founder!
So with out further ado, I’m introducing you to the first 3 and linking the rest down below on the banner. If you’d like to check out the web series I highly suggest taking a weekend and reading at least the first 2 books! There are multiple covers and omnibus versions so the choice is yours but I personally am a fan of the images I used on this post cause that’s how I was introduced to this series!
